Tension Mounts: Atiku, Wike Camps Gear Up for Political Showdown

1 min read

The upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is shaping up to be a battleground between different factions within the party. The camp of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Nyesom Wike/G-5 group are both entrenched in their positions regarding the removal of the party’s Acting National Chairman, Umar Ilya Damagum.

While indications suggest that Damagum may survive the impending challenge, Atiku’s camp is reportedly prepared to fiercely contest the issue. On the other hand, the Wike/G-5 group has thrown its support behind Damagum, adding to the complexity of the situation.

Efforts to unseat Damagum face resistance from many party leaders and NEC members, who are mobilizing in his support. Additionally, an aspirant for the office of National Chairman, David Ombugadu, has declared his backing for Damagum.

The struggle for control of the party reflects broader tensions within the PDP, with competing visions for its future direction. Atiku’s camp seeks to “rescue” the party and return it to its former glory, while the Wike/G-5 group aims to maintain the status quo.

The composition of the NEC, which includes key party officers and stakeholders, will ultimately determine Damagum’s fate and the direction of the party. However, the situation is complicated by hidden motives and personal ambitions of leaders in both camps.

Amidst the power struggle, Damagum remains non-committal, stating that he will abide by the party’s decision. However, the uncertainty surrounding his position underscores the high stakes involved in the upcoming NEC meeting.

The outcome of the meeting will not only impact Damagum’s future but could also shape the trajectory of the PDP leading up to the 2027 presidential election. As various factions maneuver for influence, the party faces a critical juncture that will test its unity and resilience.
